State of Florida Promoting Poor Gun Safety

Good Morning USA.

I have not posted a new comment for a few months but I am coming back with a vengeance!

It seems the state of Florida just seems to want to do exactly the wrong thing at the wrong time when it comes to gun safety.  Especially those who wish to use one to protect themselves and loved ones from grievous bodily harm and violent crime.

It is bad enough that to " qualify" alot of people are getting away with firing a single WAX aka FAKE bullet into a target and there fore deemed worthy of a safety training certificate. Thus is usually from an "instructor" with not only a dubious background but a totall lack of professional
fortitude ! Now the state has made it even easier to allow untrained and ignorant people to carry a concealed weapon...Now you don't even have to go to a formal class,,,,,,,,,You just go online and take a course,,,,(Obviously another cash cow for the state),,,,,,,,Once you finish the test you then seek out an "instructor" to qualify you on the range, (which I hear from rumor contol can be had at a  gun store near Hwy 192 and Wickham),,and guess what?  You guessed right...There are plenty out there that will let you fire that one wax bullet or maybe even a REAL one and BADA BING ! You have your safety certificate in your hand and are on your way to becoming ARMED and DANGEROUS...

I dont know which is worse,,no training or bad training??,,,,,,,,,But there is an easy solution...Come see me at NorthStar Tactical and get the PROFESSIONAL TRAINING that will make the difference when the going gets tough!

Questions to ask you next "Instructor"

Good Morning USA,,,,,,,Its shaping up to be another HOT day here in Melbourne so I am being productive by getting much needed admin/office work done. Today's epiphany is about the myriad of 'Instructors" that have literally been coming out of the woodwork the last several years. As much as i support the NRA, they seem to be on a mission to get every single member certified as an 'Instructor". Now its true that I followed the same path but fortunately I quickly realised how little the class was concerned with teaching,,,,It was all about getting the paperwork and presentation down pat. In fact there was very little shooting involved. So my point here is that an NRA Instructors course does not an instructor make! It takes much much more than two days to become a true teacher/instructor....I have spent the last year attending schools and instructor workshops so that I may bring the very best teaching to the Melbourne area and yes i still look forward to more schools and seminars...
So the first rule in picking an Instructor,,,,ask about their teaching certifications as well as their real experience in personal self defense. AS many of you know I had the honor of spending several years in Iraq and other locales doing VIP protection for the US Department of State. No high adventure war stories here,,,It was all about the training and experience of protecting others. Its not just about carrying a gun...its more about safety, awareness, and being able to make split second decisions and react accordingly.
In all due to respect to the men and women of the Armed Forces and Law Enforcement..The fact that you have been and/or are at  present a soldier or LEO does not automatically make you an "Instructor". In fact most LEOs are not that good a shot to begin with. Mainly because they rarely have the time and or department funds to practice on a regular basis.
My second pet peeve about "Instructors" concerns how they dress and speak....I am sorry but showing up in cut off shorts and an Ozzie Ozborne T-shirt while interlacing your presentation with obscenities is not my idea of a competent teacher...So I ask everyone to consider the following.. Ask yourself these questions,:Does your "Instructor",,

LOOK  like a professional ?
SPEAK like a professional ?
ACT like a professional ?
ASK for references

Have a great safe day!

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

Hello USA.........Ya know..if there is one thing that stays constant in this world  (other than Cher refusing to ever be forgotten) its the male (and sometimes female) ego ! its goes right to the title of this posting. FAMOUS LAST WORDS,,,,,,,,those words being: "I Have My Permit... I Know How To Shoot "
or even better,,,"I been around guns all my life..I dont need no help" (Please excuse the grammar,,,I was reverting back to my WVa heritage)
Well to all those with egos,,,,I can assure you that 99% of you have no idea what your doing if envloved in a real life confrontation / self defense situation with an armed intruder. Interestingly enough...during the last year I have attented four LEO Instructor Develepment Schools that are for folks that are already instructors in their respective departments,,,,,,,,In EVERY class I have seen veteran law enforcement personnel FAIL to pass the final qaulification course. Just goes to show there is always room for improvement,There is no such thing as perfection,,,,,,Those of you who know me well can attest to the fact I shoot an excess of 1000 rounds or more a month,, Thats pistol and rifle....Its not just about pulling the trigger,,it a combination of safe weapons handling,,,,proper and QUICK reaction to a threat,,proper and QUICK reaction to a malfunction and proper reaction to a changing scenario......
I dont expect anyone to shoot as much as I do........I strive to be the best possible so that I may give the very best instruction possible.....So.. READY TO DROP YOUR EGO for a one hour lesson?
IF you do not think I have improved your skills I will REFUND your money 100%.
In closing..think about it...do you want to become a statistic or a winner?

PLUGGING HOLES

Morning USA....I am happy to report that my first Civilian Trauma Medicine Course was a success with all participants. There were seven students and each voiced a much better understanding of how a real life situation might present itself. An extremely graphic PP presentation, with most of the images coming from my time in Iraq, really hit home. The course covered Stab wounds...GSW, Blunt Trauma, Burns and Eenvironmental (heat) related injuries. Treatment options were kept to the basics.....much along the lines of when many of us OLD EMS folks were forced to do wonders with very little in the way of equipment/gear/supplies.
The last segment involved subjecting two pork roasts to several rounds of 9mm hollow points. Nothing better than this to demonstrate the type wounds this ammo will produce.I am hoping to ofter this class again in late June...keep an eye on the web site calendar. for dates and times. SACRED GROUND

As an instructor coach and teacher I have found that there is one line where I tread cautiously before crossing. That is the line of trying to advise a parent (usually male) that the firearm instruction they are giving their child (usually a son) is either slightly flawed or downright dangerous. This is a time honored event that I too experienced with my own father when I was a boy growing up in the mountains of West Virginia.

As with anything..learning a potentially live saving skill should be taught by competent and experienced instructors. More than one husband/boyfriend has found this to be true when trying to teach their opposite number. Most of these episodes end with frustration on the part of both parties.

So its up to you as a parent or well meaning spouse,,,,,seek first rate instruction for what could be a life saving skill!  Call NSTT today!

Lets Keep It Simple !

Morning USA!
Well i am happy to say the last gun show in Melbourne was a good success!  I managed to hand out all of my brochures and most of my business cards. More and more concerned people who are determining that they WILL NOT BE A VICTIM ! With this comes the realization that if they do decide to employ a firearm in that pursuit they need PROFESSIONAL and COMPETENT training!
Unfortunately there are still those that seem to think that a power point presentation and the firing of a wax bullet will bring them to some level of preparedness. So... What is the recipe for success?  Simple
Take an NRA approved pistol  safety course.
Buy a quality firearm that fits your needs.
Practice good basic marksmanship skills
Practice good self defense shootng skills ( THERE IS A DIFFERENCE )
Combine all ingredients....YOU WILL SURVIVE !

Why Wait??  GIVE NSTT a call !

Another School Completed

Hello to all my friends..past students and those of you that have yet to call me! This past week was a hectic one seeing how I was honing my teaching/shooting skills at a local NRA Law Enforcement Instructor School course concerning the Precision Rifle (AKA Sniper Rifle). This now makes four NRA LEO instructor schools I have completed and as always..they are excellent courses. There is always something new to learn AND on how to teach those skills.
As usual I was at Action Gun on Aurora Rd. getting in my weekly practice.and as usual I saw 99% of the shooters there wasting time..ammo..effort and doing nothing in the way of improving their shooting skills. If anything they keep practicing bad skills that make them that much harder to finally train right.  Oh..it can be done...just makes it harder as time passes.
DON'T BE COMPLACENT !! Learn the skills that may one day save your life or that of a loved one!

REFUSE TO BE A VICTIM !!
